The Rose reached 25 years of service, celebrating those they served, saying a 'thank you' to their supporters and remembering those they lost. On Thursday, November 10, 2011 the Houston Marriott South was the venue for this special celebration. The evening started with a reception and a silent auction, cancer survivors and supporters of The Rose mingled and bid on those many auction items.

The dinner and award presentation started at 7pm. Khambrel Marshall welcomed the guests to this special evening, followed by the invocation by Reverend Carol Bruse.

Honorary Chairs Harris County Judge Ed Emmett and Gwen Emmett gave their remarks before founder Dorothy Gibbons and Dixie Melillo took the stage and honored Helen Perry with the Rose Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dorothy Gibbons and Khambrel Marshall gave a multimedia review of 25 years of The Rose, which the guests filled with laughter and tears. After this review the award presentation continued and in closing Dorothy Gibbons asked all breast cancer survivors on the stage to celebrate their life and to remember those who they lost. The award celebration concluded with a rain of rose petals on the survivors.

About The Rose

The Rose was created by women who shared a passion for life and women's issues. Dr.Dixie Melillo's main concern was saving lives. She had seen too many advanced breast cancers and had watched too many women loose their battle. Dorothy Weston-Gibbon's passion was the value of women. If a woman could be convinced that she was worth the cost of a mammogram, then she'd believe she was worth something.

Since the beginning, The Rose has depended upon community support. Civic groups, foundations, corporations and indivudals along with the unwavering commitment of employees, physicans and volunteers all helped to create an organization that has changed the lives of countless women and families.
